Groundwater tracing in the karst of Lika, Croatia

In the hinterland of the northern part of the Velebit Mt., in a typical karst terrain occurring generally about 500m above sea level and some 20 km far from the Adriatic Sea, two rivers flow, the Lika and the Gacka. Due to abundant amounts of water during the whole year, their hydro power plants Sklope and Senj. On the bases of exploration made for the construction of the mentioned plants and comprehensive additional properties of that area were determined more in detail. A specific geological composition of the Velebit Mt. causes certain hydrogeological phenomena in the valleys of Bakovac and Gacka and in the Lipovo polje which differ from those occurring in the neighbouring karst areas. The executed groundwater flow tracings contributed for a better understanding of those specific hydrogeological conditions and their practical use in the designing of hydro power plants.
