Structural Dynamics of the Southern Part of Pannonian basin in Croatia

Five stages of structural evolution are differentiated: Late Oligocene-early Miocene, Middle Miocene, Pannonian+Pontian and the Quaternary. The Early and Middle Miocene extension is well marked. The orientation of the greatest principal stress between 25-2050 and 45-2250 is observed. Regional displacements of coherent structural blocks in NE direction result in opening of major (Sava, Drava) and local structural depressions. Typical pull-apart structures are formed with subsequent extrusions. The Medvednica fault zone is of major importance, together with the zones parallel to the Sava and Drava rivers, as well as faults on the western boundary of the Slavonian Mountains. The post-Pontian change in the stress orientation between 345-1650 and 11-1910 resulted in major changes of the structura framework: activation of dextral transcurrent displacement, articulation of the Periadriatic-Drava wrench zone and parallel faults that are marking the zone of transpression. Frequent tectonic inversions are marked by closing of some grabens and half-grabens, by reactivation of former tectonic zones often transformed into reverse faults bordering recent structural units and by rotation of the rock masses.
