Middle Eocene turnover of smaller benthic foraminifera in Istrian flysch basin.
The smaller benthic foraminiferal associations in the middle Eocene flysch section (P11 to P13 zones) show trends that resemble faunal patterns that occur after the late Paleocene benthic extinction event in different parts of the world. After the diverse fauna with dominance of calcareous foraminifera in the older part of the Istrian section, there is middle interval dominated by Haplophragmoides spp. and Trochammina spp. The abundance of tubular agglutinants increases abruptly, faunal diversity drop might reflect short term decrease in productivity. This is followed by the recovery of planktonic assemblage and end by high diversity fauna with high abundance of calcareous foraminifera, dominated by Cibicidoides and Lenticulina species.
