Complex nourishment of sand beaches of the Island of Rab (eastern Adriatic, Croatia).
Here, we are reporting on first result of the study in course, which is intended to decipher the provenance of sands from two beaches, and to serve as the base for understanding the nourischment paths and styles related to the beaches of the Island of Rab. The proportion of carbonate sand grains, as well as the proportion of main noncarbonate particles (quartz, rock particles, feldspar) in sands differ little if different beaches are compared. However, heavy mineral analysis reveals considerable differences in sand provenance. High proportion of ultrastable heavy minerals reflects the importance of Pleistocene sands for feeding the Beach 1. High proportion of garnet, together with local portion of ultrastable minerals in Beach 2 sand, suggests a dominant derivation from the Eocene sandstones. The study of beach nourishment and relevant protection should precede and influence the economic use of beaches.
