Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and paleoecology of the Middle to Upper Eocene succession in the North Adriatic Sea.
Three deep exploration wells in the northern part if tge Adruatuc Sea were drilled through the Middle and Upper Eocene deposits. Drill cuttings and cores were rich in well preserved planktonic foraminifera. Standard planktonic foraminiferal zones P 10 to P 17 have been identified. A zonal scheme which emphasizes levels of extinction (Last Appearance Datum) was used. Beside zonal markers, the evolutionary lineage of the Turborotalia cerroazulensis group as well as the species succession of the genus Globigerinatheka were useful for biostratigraphic analyses. Lateral difference in species diversity might be explained by different habitats, i.e. different environmental conditions. The test morphology and diversity level of the foraminiferal assemblages correspond to the Mediterranean bioprovince with a subtropical to warm-temperate climate.
