Natural radionuclides in recent marine sediments of the Adriatic sea
Adriatic sea sediment cores were sampled during few cruises by box corer. The activities of 40K, 228Ra, 226Ra and 238U were determined by gamma-spectrometry method. Naturally occurring radionuclides activity, as geogene trace elements concentration, generally are high in pelitic sediments while, the lowest concentrations correspond to the sands and silts which are spread along the Croatian coast mainly. 226Ra distribution follows the distribution of uranium generally. 40K and 228Ra distribution are strongly influenced and governed by the grain size distribution which is in fact clay mineral content of the analysed sediments. Concentrations are generally lower in sediments with higher carbonate content.
