Current Measurements and an Event of Wind Forcing at Sub-tidal Frequencies in the Shallow Maketu
Results of recording current meter measurements at 1 m above the seabed within the shallow Maketu Estuary in New Zealand are reported. These observations are analysed together with local wind recorded concurrently at the site. Strong tidal currents peaking over 1ms-1 in the main channel in the mid reaches of the estuary were measured. A high negative correlation (r2=-0.69) between along-channel current and orthogonal wind stress components shows that currents flow against the wind in the lower estuary. With the measurement site located in a channel adjacent to a large inter-tidal bank, the results indicate the importance of depth variation in wind forcing in very shallow intertidal estuaries.
