Temporal variations of shallow-water tides in Maketu Estuary, Bay of Plenty, North Island

Observations were collected for 3 tidal water level stations within Maketu Estuary, an estuarine-lagoon in the Bay of Plenty. The observations include 4 months of data after the Kaituna River was partially re-diverted back into the estuary. Analysis of the data resolved 14 significant tidal constituents using the least-squares harmonic analysis method. The magnitude of the tidal asymmetry is given by the M4/M2 amplitude ratio ranging from 0.27 to 0.32 for the analysed period. Prior to diversion there was a noticeable time lag at low water between the lower and upper reaches of the estuary, but after diversion no time lag at low tide between lower and upper reaches of estuary was evident. After diversion there is a shorter duration of slack water at high tide in the upper reaches. As a result of the shorter period at slack water there is less chance for suspended material to be deposited. However, the flood/ebb durational difference (shorter flood than ebb by about 3 hours) indicate that Maketu remains a strongly non-linear as well as frictionally dominated inlet/estuarine system. This has important implications regarding net sediment transport, suggesting continuation of net flood directed bedload sediment transport leading to infilling of the estuary.
