Tidal gauging of 10 May 1996 at maketu estuary inlet

This study was commissioned by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (Environmet BOP). As part of a flood control and drainage scheme, the Kaituna River was diverted to a coastal outlet at Te Tumu in 1956. Kaituna River diversion has substantially reduced the tidal prism of Maketu Estuary. On 7 February 1994 a staged re-diversion of the Kaituna River water via a control structure at Ford's Cut was approved by the Environment BOP and Consent Number 02 2636 issued to the Minister of Conservation (McIntosh and Park, 1995). In February 1996 a staged re-diversion of the Kaituna River water in the Maketu Estuary was started. The following extract from the letter of the Environment BOP dated 11 May 1995 describe needs for tidal gauging at Maketu Estuary : '' Environment BOP's interest in having tidal gaugings conducted for the estuary is not only to establish the tidal prism at this point in time but to make comparisons to previous data. Comparisons should allow any detectable trends of sediment infilling of the estuary to be established". This report details the results of the tidal gauging at Maketu Estuary carried out on 10 May 1996 in response to requirements mentioned above.
