Impervious barriers for landfills in karst
The aim of the research project is to prove that the soil materials from flysh deposits, which are locally available on the Istrian peninsula at low cost, can be used as the components of the liner layers in municipal landfills. The results of the soil investigation presented in the paper are a part of this project which is still under way. On several sites on the Istrian peninsula the samples of marly material were collected and tested in the laboratory. The results show that all samples could be classified as clayey material of low plasticity. The results of X-ray analysis proved that all samples are composed of cca 30-40 percent of clay minerals. Permeability tests performed in the oedometer cell prove that tested soil material can achieve permeability less than 1*10-7 cm/s.
