Distribution of selected elements in soils in the vicinity of the coal burning power plant "Plomin", Istria, Croatia.
Results of As, Se, V, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb analysis in soils from the vicinity of the Plomin coal fired plant and from areas considered as geochemical background are discussed. The mean concentrations for - 63 mm fraction of topsoil samples around the Plomin power plant are as follows: Se 5.64 mg kg-1, As 10.3 mg kg-1, V 166 mg kg-1, Cr 145 mg kg-1, Ni 80 mg kg-1, Zn 143 mg kg-1, Pb 143 mg kg-1 , the soils from the Risnjak national park have the following mean concentrations Se 0.84 mg kg-1, As 18.5 mg kg-1, V 123 mg kg-1, Cr 66 mg kg-1, Ni 49 mg kg-1, Zn 114 mg kg-1, Pb 65 mg kg-1. In the samples of arable soils mixed with coal mine backfill materials from the vicinity of the Tupljak coal mine only selenium was analyzed and its concentrations ranged from 2.14 to 4.69 mg kg-1. Selenium and chromium have evidently had the most impact on the soils around the power plant at Plomin, while higher contents of Ni, V, and Mn are less pronounced. Lead and Zn concentrations fall well into the background range.
