Geological Structure and Petrographic Composition of Croatia
Regionally bound building materials of Croatia depend upon the geological structure and petrographic composition of the corresponding area. The primary building material in the northern part of Croatia is brick, the second is wood, a nd stone is of secondary importance. In the southern parts, buildings from ancient times to the present have been built of stone, in the first place with limestone of autochthonous origin. In Croatia we can clearly recognize and determine the origin of unbuilt limestone of ancient quarries from Istria to Dalmatia, on the basis of their indetification marks, the fossil assotiation of corresponding stratigraphic units, or structural elements.
