Hydrogeological Basis For The Protection Of The Groundwater Potential Of The SW Bosnia And Herzegovina

The region of SW Bosnia and Herzegovina is a part of the Outer Dinarides highkarst. The region is mainly built of carbonate rocks of completely developed Mesozoic Era as well as of Palaeogene, Neogene and Quaternary sediments. During the recession period, from June to October, a considerable part of surface terrain becomes very poor with water. At the same time the deep karstified underground, at depths over 100 meters, contains abundant quantities of water, suitable for water supply. The groundwater outflows at several springs located along the erosion base of main rivers (river Cetina and Neretva with its tributaries Rama, Trebižat, etc.) and along the NW margins of the karst poljes (Duvanjsko, Livanjsko, Imotsko, Mostarsko polje). In the area of 5 550 km2 with only 250 000 inhabitants, is a great water supply potential of approximately 9345*109 m3/year. Estimated dynamic groundwater reserves in minimum are 32 m3/s while during average hydrologic conditions are 325 m3/s. Taking into account recent hydrological minimum capacity, only 8 % of reserves are used for water supply and 15% for irrigation of agricultural lends. Present water-supply activities on the regional level are linked to large karst springs. Water captures by deep wells in the vicinity of karst springs are rare. During the recession period the spring discharge rate varies from 0, 5 to 4 m3/s, but average values are higher, from 5 to 15 m3/s. The discharge periods of many intermittent springs are between six and ten months per year. Some of them are upward springs, where shallow water captures were constructed somewhat to the rare of the spring (Grudsko vrilo, Grahovsko vrilo, Vrgorska banja and Grabovo vrilo. The summarized results of this study will be finally used in the future management of sustainable development of the whole region and protection of its valuable ground water resources.
