Physical properties and currents recorded during September and October 1998 in the Velebit Channel (East Adriatic)

In the present paper some preliminary results of an experiment performed in the Velebit Channel between 4 September and 11 October 1998 are discussed. Throughout the experiment currents were measured at three stations and two levels, using AANDERAA RCM 4S and RCM 7 current meters. At the beginning and end of the experiment the CTD profiling was done using SEABIRD 17 probe, at the network of 27 station positioned c.2 NM apart. On the final day of the experiment the profile were also taken in the Zrmanja Estuary. All the experimental data could be compared with the tide gauge records routinely collected at the nearby stations (Zadar, Bakar) and with the time series originating from the meteorological stations in the area (Senj, Obrovac, Šibenik). Meteorological data showed that during the summer 1998 rainfall was below the long-term average and that in September 1998 it suddenly surpassed not only the corresponding average but the upper standard-deviation limit as well. As a consequence of this anomaly, in the course of our experiment the salinity was considerably reduced in the Velebit Channel, mostly in the surface layer, thus enabling various freshwater discharges in the area to be quantitatively documented. As the interval between the two CTD surveys was also characterized by numerous Sirocco and Bora wind pulses, current meters simultaneously operating in the channel captured its response to the wind forcing. Both the density and currents data indicated that the northern part of the Velebit Channel is predominantly influenced by wind, whereas its southern part is mostly buoyancy driven. Implications of these findings for the proposed construction of thermal power plant in the area are briefly commented upon.
