Sewage outfalls in the channel area: the Zadar and Pašman Channels (east Adriatic)

During summer 1994 an experiment was undertaken in the area of Zadar and Pašman Channels in order to determine the best position for sewage outfalls of cities of Zadar and Biograd. The channels are about 50 kilometres long and 2-6 kilometres wide with depth varying from 8 to 50 metres. The whole area is very attractive and favourable for the tourism. Due to basin configuration the major measurements were placed at the entrances and at the expected best outfall positions. The experiment included the measurements of physical, chemical and bioecological parameters, however, this paper is focused on the physical dynamics and processes which may play a role to the contamination of the region. Vertical stratification occurring during summer reduces the vertical mixing processes, nevertheless, the eddies driven by the topography may induce the mixing processes and bring the pollutants in the surface layer. An interesting process for such small area - internal Kelvin waves - were detected and examined, having period of about 4 days and current amplitudes up to 10 cm/s, therefore producing high transport rates which can influence the spreading of the pollutants.
