Distribution of copper in healing marine sediment (peloid) from Makirina Bay in central Adriatic

The coastal sediment from Makirina Bay in the central Adriatic represents an important source of healing marine mud named peloid that could be used for medical treatment. Previous investigations of the sediment organoleptic properties showed that this peloid is of high quality but no investigations on heavy metals were done before this study. twenty-nine sediment cores to the depth of about 30 cm were collected and copper concetrations were determined by fusion ICP. Distibution of copper in surficial sediment is shoWn on the geochemical map. the level of contamination was determined with calculated index of geoaccumulation (Igeo). The results show that the distribution of copper is mainly controlled by sediment mineralogy and grain size but the influence of fresh water inflows (submerged springs) is also important. Calculated indexes of geoaccumulation show that the sediment is relatively unpolluted, but evaluation of contamination depends on the choice of background values.
