Evaluation of Metal Pollution In Coastal sediment from Makirina Bay in the central Adriatic
Heavy metal pollution was studied in coastal sediment from Makirina Bay in the central Adriatic which represents an important source of healing marine mud, called peloid mud, that could, according to its organoleptic properties, be used for medical treatment. Twenty-nine sediment cores to a depth of about 30 cm were collected and concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined by fusion ICP. The level of sediment contamination was determined by the calculated index of geoaccumulation (Igeo). The resulrs show that the sediment is relatively unpolluted, but evaluation of contamination depends on the choice of background values.
