Following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991, Croatia once again became an independent country. Croatians are long-established in their Adriatic-Danubian territory and enjoy a long tradition of statehood, having being politicaly organized as far back as seventh century. This chapter deals with Croatia's main characteristics, covering both its historical development and its prospects for future. Attention is given to the principal factors which have influenced its development, including its physicar resources and geopolitical position.
