Paleogene larger foraminifera, their depositional environments and importance as petroleum reservoirs (Amalina-1 and Belina-1 off-shore wells, Libya)

Larger foraminifera, especially nummulites, occur in Eocene marine carbonates of circum Mediterranean, Middle East and Indian Subcontinent. The carbonates commonly contain significant volumes of hydrocarbons and may constitute potential exploration targets . The Eocene El Garia Formation (Metlaoui Carbonate Group) and Reineche Member, Oligocene Vascus and Ketatna Members of Libya, Tunisia and Egypt, are important reservoirs offshore North Africa. Ketatna reef/perireef build ups were drilled in Amalina-1 well. These sediments present a sequence of wackestones/packstones and rarely boundstones with abundant larger foraminifera, corals and echinoids debris in micritic matrix. Sequence of nummulitic limestones, known as Vascus Member, occurs at the base of the Oligocene. This thin, widespread horizon and diagnostic marker is well presented in Amalina-1. Bioclastic limestones of Reineche Member with isolated intraparticle and vuggy porosity have been observed in Middle Eocene cored interval of the Belina-1 well. Metlaoui Carbonate Group has been very well documented by four cored intervals in the same well. It consists of wackestones and to a smaller degree packstones with Nummulite-rich accumulations and shows of oil.
