Causes of instability on railroad route Zagreb-Rijeka, Croatia
Since six months ago, a greater endangerment of the traffic safety has shown on the railroad Zagreb - Rijeka. Although the railroad deformations have been present even much longer before, the present intensity has pointed out the further development with potential danger of interrupting the railway traffic. For this reason, urgent complex research works have been started (geological, geophysical, geomechanical), with scope to find an economically acceptable solution for technical improvement. According the researching results, the picture of the spatial structure arrangement, composition and soil characteristics as well as possible causes and mechanisms of instability have been obtained. The location in subject is made of carbonate Malm rocks with tectonically damaged zone, recorded as a result of the seismic activity of the main Delnice fault, which is situated approx. 750 m eastwards. The very landslide is situated in the fault zone, it is inclined in respect to the position of the railroad, orientation Nord-South. It is elongated in shape, borders are undefined, length is 35,0 m, width is 25,0 m. It is of complex character, and is defined as an old landslide. In this work, all researching data, evaluation of possible causes and sliding mechanisms as well as the selection of the technical remedial works will be shown.
