Late Barremian and Late Albian (Early Cretaceous) Dinosaur Track Sites in the Main Brioni/Brijun Island (SW Istria, Croatia)

One late Barremian and two late Albian dinosaur footprint sites are described from the Main Brioni/Brijun Island (Istria, Republic of Croatia). The single late Barremian surface at Pogledalo site preserves more than 50 large theropod footprints. As far as can be deduced from the few track segments, the traclernakers’ gait was a moderate walk. The two footprint-bearing beds at the Ploče site show medium to small-size theropod footprints. The prevailing gait was moderate to fast walking. This is probably the site described by A. Bachofen-Echt in 1925 as “Kap Rocca”. Five large to medium-size footprints deposited at a building in the Port of the island probably originate from this site. The nontridactyl footprints reported by Bachofen-Echt in 1925 are most probably human artifacts and occur in several other outcrops along the coasts of Istria. Two footprint-bearing beds are reported from the Plješivac (Kamik) site. The lower one has an S-shaped long track segment by a moderately large ornithopod that moved rather slowly. The footprints seem to be asymmetric and are reminiscent of the foot structure of hadrosaurs that lived later on the same carbonate platform. The upper bed has one short and three long track segments probably impressed by narrow-toed medium-sized theropods with an irregular and relatively slow gait. In all sites preservational factors sensibly affect the shape of the footprints.
