Organic-walled Dinoflagellate Cysts of the Pannonian - Pontian Boundary in Croatian part of Pannonian Basin

Within the research project “Basic Geological Map of Republic Croatia 1: 50000”, palynological analysis has been carried out on fine-grained clastics, in order to define the Pannonian / Pontian boundary. In the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin the Pannonian / Pontian boundary is defined by mollusks (Banatica / Abichi deposits): i.e. the disappearing of Congeria banatica and first appearing of Paradacna abichi. But Paradacna abichi existed from upper Pannonian till upper Pontian and therefore cannot be used as a zone fossil. Because dinocysts are particularly well suited for correlations between proximal and distal part of basin, this deposits have been correlated with deposits from Hungary. Sütőné - Szentai (1988, 1994) gave detailed description of the organic microplankton zones of the Hungarian Pannonian sensio lato deposits. For the Pannonian / Pontian transition Sütőné - Szentai described two characteristic palynozones and five palynosubzones that can be recognized in Croatian part of the Basin as well. The Spiniferites bentori zone characterises the Upper Pannonian deposits and is divided into three subzones that are usually chronological, but sometimes not easily recognisable. The mass occurrence of the membranous forms of Spiniferites sp., at the end of zone Spiniferites bentori, indicates transgression. The beginning of the succeeding Spiniferites balcanicus zone (lower Pontian) is defined by the first occurrence of Spiniferites balcanicus (Baltes) Sütőné - Szentai, Spiniferites bentori "coniunctus" Sütőné - Szentai, Spiniferites maisensis Sütőné - Szentai, Spiniferites validus Sütőné - Szentai, Spiniferites virgulaeformis Sütőné - Szentai, Nematosphaeropsis "bicorporis" Sütőné - Szentai, "Milioudodinium" pelagicum Sütőné - Szentai. The zone is divided in two subzones for which I think are ecological, not stratigraphical. Spiniferites bentori "coniunctus" subzone is characterized by distal forms with thinner wall, whereas Spiniferites validus subzone contain more proximal forms with thicker wall. This, also, explain why complete, intact specimens of Spiniferites validus Sütőné - Szentai occur as a rule in more sandy sediments, while fragments are usually found in silts due to their transport from proximal to distal parts of the basin. The assemblages of the Spiniferites balcanicus zone contain few Tethyan dinocyst species: Achomosphaera andalusiensis (Jan du Chêne) Jan du Chêne & Londeix, Impagidinium patulum (Wall) Stover & Evitt, Operculodinium centrocarpum (Deflandre & Cookson) Wall, Polysphaeridium zoharyi (Rossignol) Bujak et al., which indicates communication between Tethys and Paratethys at that time. The first occurrence of the Impagidinium spongianum Sütőné - Szentai with thick wall ("Spongiosphaeridinium pannonicum" ?Baltes) marks the beginning of the Upper Pontian proximal deposits, whereas Galeacysta etrusca Corradini & Biffi marks the beginning of the Upper Pontian distal deposits. These assemblages can be correlated both with Hungarian sites and the Messinian “lago-mare” in Italy.
