Relationships between phytoplankton crop, primary production and accumulation of carbohydrates in the northern Adriatic
Studying seasonal and spatial patterns of CHO is one of the key prerequisites for understanding the environmental factors and mechanisms potentially leading to large-scale mucilage events, which have become more frequent in the northern Adriatic during the last two decades. This paper deals with the annual cycle of particulate (PTCHO) and dissolved carbohydrates (DTCHO) during 1998 with a special emphasis on their relationship to primary production and phytoplankton crop. Samples for the carbohydrate, photosynthetic pigment and primary production analyses were collected in the central part of the northern Adriatic at several stations along the transect Po River mouth-Rovinj. DTCHO and PTCHO were determined spectrophotometrically using the MBTH method, while the characterisation of the phytoplankton crop was based on HPLC determinations of chlorophyll and carotenoid photosynthetic pigments. The distribution of CHO in the northern Adriatic showed a rather pronounced spatial and temporal variability. The distribution patterns of PTCHO and DTCHO were rather different. The concentration of PTCHO varied mainly in the range from 20-200 µ ; ; g C/l with two peaks, coinciding with maxima of the phytoplankton crop after typical spring and autumn freshets. The distribution of DTCHO, however, showed no correlation with chlorophyll a and reached maximum values during summer stratification (350-450 µ ; ; g C/l), when the phytoplankton crop remained typically low. The reason for such a situation was most probably an enhanced primary production in light-favoured conditions as well as release of carbon-rich organic matter by summer phytoplankton in nitrogen-depleted conditions. This process seems to be effective only in the upper layer of the stratified water column, while the concentration of DTCHO in the bottom layer remained low (100-200 µ ; ; g C/l) and rather constant throughout the year.
