CURRENT RESEARCH OF SOIL GEOCHEMISTRY IN THE CROATIAN KARST
Retention properties depend first of all on the mineral composition (content of expandable clay minerals, Fe-oxyhydroxides and carbonates) and on the content of organic matter. These components influence the soil reaction (pH) and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) that control the mobility of heavy metals. Using sequential analyses, the most important processes of heavy metal immobilisation, but also the possibility of their re-mobilization could be recognised. Currently sequential extraction of soil samples of both natural and polluteds performed to give the following five fractions: adsorbed (AD), bound to carbonate, bound to iron and manganese oxides, bound to organic matter and residual. The procedure is slightly modified according to methods given by Tessier et al. (1979) and Hall et al. (1996). The following reagents had been used: NH4-acetate, Na-acetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydrogen peroxide + nitric acid, mixed acids (HCl-HNO3-HF), respectively. Also the three stage BCR procedure of Ure et al., 1995 is also used.
