Grimani Cadastral Survey and the Mediterranean geographical Environment (Case Study in Dalmatia)
The analysis of the Grimani cadatral records shows, at the first place, that it can be avaluated as a very reliable and accurate document and source for research. Comparing basic preserved elements from the cadatral map with the present-day topographical map (after leveling the scales) it was found that the location of patronymic hamlets and a church, field paths, hums and major karst fans match entirely. Therefore, the Grimani cadatral map is a very precise and reliable document of the time. In spite of the relative poverty of the cadatral content, particularly in relation to some other, more or less, synchronous cadastral records, the Grimani cadastre enable the reconstruction of the basic traits of the geographic environment of the time. Moreover, comparing to some other, present-day records, it is possible to trace the changes that occured in the course of the centuries, regarding the geographic environment itself, as well as the way of life, that are. beyond any doubt, highly interrelated.
