The Internal Dinarides and their dismembered fragments in the South Pannonian Basin

In central, less disturbed parts of the Dinarides, from the SW (Apulia) toward the NE (Tisia), the following internal units, originating in basinal Tethyan environments, can be distinguished (Pamić et al., 1988): 1. Carbonate-clastic sequences, in some places with flysch signatures, of the passive continental margin - "flysch bosniaque" of the French geologists (AUBOUIN et al., 1970) ; 2. Ophiolites associated with genetically related sedimentary formations of the Tethyan open-ocean realm - the Dinaride Ophiolite Zone (DOZ), and 3. Sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic units of Eurasian (Tisian) active continental margin - the Sava- Vardar Zone (SVZ). This regular zonal pattern in the spatial distribution of the Internal Dinaridic tectonostratigraphic units is tectonically disturbed by Paleozoic-Triassic napes. The internal Dinaridic units, however, also occur as small and large mappable disconnected fragments within the South PB. They are positioned in two segments: 1. In South Tisia adjoining the northernmost Dinarides, the SVZ fragments are represented by Late Cretaceous/Paleogene flysch at the base interlayered with subduction-related basalts and rhyolites, Late Paleogene metamorphic sequence originating from this flysch sequence, and tectonized ophio- lite melange (Mts. Poze~ka Gora, Fru~ka Gora and subsurface occurrences in the Sava and Drava depressions). Occurrences of these SVZ fragments in the South PB can be explained by twofold mechanisms of tectonic transport (Pamić, 1998): a) Those located at depths of 3000-4000 m at the base of Neogene fill of the South PB were uplifted during Late Oligocene/Early Miocene wrench faulting controlling the incipient development of the Sava and Drava depressions. b) The SVZ klippen found at the surface of the South PB were emplaced during the compressional and strike- slip deformation (HORVATH, 1993) as indicated by sediments of Pannonian stage underlaying the klippen. 2. Allochthonous fragments of the Internal Dinarides are much more common in the Alps/Dinarides adjoining area. a) The Zagorje-Midtransdanubian (PAMIĆ & TOMLJENOVIĆ, 1998) or Sava Zone (HAAS et al., 2000) includes the SVZ fragments composed of Late Cretaceous/Paleogene tectonized ophiolite melange, Late Cretaceous/Paleogene flysch and Variscan metasediments and orthogreenschists of the Austroalpine affinity. b) The Büükkium terrane is mainly composed of large mappable Internal Dinaridic units, e.g. the Borsod unit (FULOP, 1997). It includes several subunits composed of i) Jurassic limestones, shales with turbiditic signatures, radiolarites and olistoliths which are correlative to "flysch bosniaque" of the Internal Dinarides, ii) Jurassic uncomplete ophiolite sequences incorporated into chaotic shaley-silty matrix, e.g. olistostrome ophiolite melange which is correlative to the DOZ melange, and iii) paraautochthonous Variscan, post-Variscan and Triassic formations which are correlative with Paleozoic-Triassic nappes thrust onto ophiolite for- mations of the DOZ (PAMIC et al., 1998). In conclusion, the Zagorje-Midtransdanubian or Sava Zone and the Bükkium terrane are really parts of the Internal Dinarides. For that reason, the current extrusive mechanism (KAZMER & KOVACS, 1985, and others) for their tectonic emplacement should be reconsidered.
