Oligocene formations in the South Pannonian Basin in Croatia

The presence of the Oligocene sedimentary formations in the basement of the Croatian part of South Pannonian Basin (SPB) is still ambiguous. It prevails an opinion (in Croatian geology) that Oligocene formations are missing in the eastern part of the SPB, e.g. east of the Zagreb-Zemplin Lineament. That is because no paleontologically documented Oligocene formations are known from the outcrops, and which can be compared to well exposed Middle and Late Oligocene transgressive-regressive sequences reported from central and north-eastern Slovenia (continental and marine Soteski and Gornjograjski beds and calc-alkaline volcanism dominated Smrekovske beds). Still, there are some formations that are generally attributed to Oligocene in the area of the SPB depressions: - The documented Oligocene deposits are known from the wells in Peteranec area, placed SE from Legrad swell. They are composed of conglomerate, sandstone, graywacke, tuffitic graywacke, tuff and siltstone with radiolarians and diatomeas in the matrix. Sedimentological analyses of the core samples suggest their origin from debris flows and mass flows into a deeper marine environment. - Fluvial and lacustrine deposits from Karlovac and Glina Depressions could be also of Oligocene age. According to the outcrop and well data they are composed of conglomerate, siltstone, sandstone and clay interbedded with coal at the top of the succession. Atypical and rare planctonic foraminifers (globigerinas) only suggest their Oligocene affinity. Those deposits are genetically related to Cretaceous-Paleogene flysch formation and considered to be its final member - The most often are coarse grained clastics, mostly composed of breccia-conglomerate and coarse s sandstone, interbedded with marl, clay and in place with coal, attributed to Egerian-Eggenburgian s which are related to the initial phase of the opening of the Neogene SPB. They are common in the wells from Sava and Drava Depressions. Those deposits are rarely paleontologically documented. Conversely, on seismic sections it is clearly expressed that those formations as strongly tectonically disturbed, unconformably related to the basement, and most often truncated by erosional unconformity at the top. Those formations can be compared with Egerian-Eggenburgian clastic interlayered with volcanic and pyroclastic rocks (SIMUNIĆ, 1992) of the calc-alkaline affinity (PAMIĆ & BALEN, 2000) from Hrvatsko Zagorje, belonging to the Zagorje-Mid-Thansdanubian tectonic unit (PAMIĆ & TOMLJENOVIĆ, 1998). - Oligocene formations of volcanic and pyroclastic rocks were discovered by oil wells in the deep struc- tures along the southern margin of Drava Depression. K-Ar measurements carried out on volcanic samples yielded radiometric ages ranging mainly between 31.7&plusmn ; ; ; 7.3 and 25.4&plusmn ; ; ; 6.6 Ma thus documenting their Oligocene age (PAMIĆ, 1997). The large volcanic bodies, associated with volcanic breccia and often interlayered with fine grained non-marine clastics are recognisable on seismic sections, especially in the eastern part of the Drava Depression. They are mainly of the same petrological and geochemical composition as those from Hrvatsko Zagorje and Slovenia, and there fore assumed to belong to the regional postcollisional transpression (LAUBSCHER, 1983 ; TARI & PAMIC, 1998) prior to the opening of the Neogene Pannonian Basin.
