Analytical methods focused on studying phytonutrients in food

In the past couple of decades, with a growing number of reports supporting the benefits of phytonutrients from food on human health, there have been an increasing number of studies on the development of analytical methods and platforms for their detection. Modern metabolomic platforms for phytonutrient analysis of food consist of highly sophisticated separation techniques coupled with different detectors and/or spectroscopic techniques, and are known as hyphenated techniques. Many modern hyphenated techniques are currently available, but the most commonly and widely used remain GC- and LC- based platforms. This review summarizes their principles, advantages and disadvantages in phytonutrient research.
