Floor Structures and Seismic Resistance of Cultural Heritage Stone Masonry Buildings

A method of deterministic quantification of the concept of "seismic resistance" of rigid stone buildings is presented. The procedure is based on the concept of relation of calculated and capacity values of the parameters of structure response. The degradation of rigidity, ductility and energy dissipation determine the global coefficient of the seismic state (x) of the structure. The ground acceleration (ag) at which the ultimate value of the seismic state coefficient (x) is achieved, determines the quantified seismic resistance of the building. The calculation of seismic resistance of stone masonry buildings was performed as a parametric study by varying the parameters of decisive importance for seismic resistance of such buildings: the type of floor structure, the layout with regard to the direction of earthquake, the quality of walls and the number of stories. The results of performed calculations were systematically arranged in order to find the mutual relation of seismic resistance of buildings with various floor structures to the resistance of these same buildings with “ absolutely rigid floors” . Based on this systematisation, “ seismically acceptable” and “ seismically unacceptable” structural concepts for stone masonry buildings were defined. Diagrams of relative relations of seismic resistance, appropriate to practice, are given with suggestions how to use it.
