Ukraine & Croatia : problems of post-communist societies

Ukraine and Croatia - two countries with many differences, but also many similarities. The differences in size, history, geopolitical position, cultural and civilisational surroundings - do not nullify the similarities - primarily the recent historic socio-political developments, first in the direction of communism and subsequently post-communism - the main distinguishing marks of the current social and political realities of these two countries. It is just this analogy between the problems posed by the turbulent and uncertain reality of post-communism that turned the meeting of a group of Ukrainian social scientists with their Croatian counterparts into a lasting form of collaboration. Our common scientific interests resulted in the international conference Ukraine and Croatia: Problems of Post-communist Societies, held in Kiev from the 27th to the 29th of June 1996. Ten Croatian and ten Ukrainian scientists from the fields of social science and the humanities - philosophers, sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, cultural analysts and economists, took part in the conference. They identified and analyzed the most acute problems of post-communism common to both countries: the recidivism of communism, the lack of democracy, dialogue and tolerance, economic problems, social stratification, the poverty affecting the largest social group and the rise of a new elite based on the illegal accumulation of wealth by the mafiocracy and the kleptocracy , ethnic conflicts, difficulties in European integration ...
