Railway transport as backbone for the development of port Ploče

Port Ploče is situated on the east side of the Adriatic coast. It represents the starting and the ending point of the Pan-European Corridor Vc and the intersection of road, air, naval, river and railway transport. The present paper will deal with the current state of the mentioned port, especially the relationship between the port and the railway infrastructure in relation to the amount of total traffic. We will also examine the influence that the development of port Ploče might have on railway transport. A plan for the future development of the railway transport in reference with the development of port Ploče will be put forward. In accordance with the European traffic policy, a significant use of railway transport is to be expected for purposes of importation, exportation and transit of goods from port Ploče to its surroundings.
