Influence of gamma-irradiation on crystallization and morphology of poly(ethylene oxide)/silica nanocomposites
Thermal properties and morphology of gamma-irradiated PEO/silica nanocomposites and pure PEO films were studied. Solution-cast films had 'comet'-type spherulite morphology. Nucleating effect of silica caused appearance of small spherulites and additional increase of the degree of crystallinity at the dose of 100 kGy contributing to increase due to degradation of PEO. Irradiation atmosphere had insignificant effect so higher doses and modification of preparation procedure were needed to reduce the degree of crystallinity for polyelectrolyte production.
