Crystallization and Polymorphism of gamma-irradiated poly(ethylene oxide)
The crystallization of unirradiated and gamma-irradiated PEO powders of three molecular masses differing to about two orders of magnitude was investigated by DSC. In samples irradiated in air to and above 100 kGy multiple peaks were detected as result of polymorphic changes due to degradation and additional crystallization of resulting shorter chains. The degradation reduced inner order of spherulites and caused typical changes of morphology. FTIR spectra revealed changes in hydrogen bonding consistent with rearrangement of PEO chain into folded macroconformation.
