Statistical analysis of DNA microarray data: Limitations and perspectives
DNA microarray analysis is a laboratory technique that permits simultaneous measurement of messenger RNA expression for larger number of genes. The original motivation behind development of this technology was automated discovery of gene networks. However, statistical basis of DNA microarray data analysis is still controversial. The most important statistical problems are: normalization methods, a huge number of genes (variables) versus a small number of observations (the dimensionality of the data), multiple comparison and low power. In our paper we explain how statistical limitations prevented DNA microarray to fulfil its original role.
