Experimental Characterisation of a Bell Prover

Bell provers are in most cases primary standards in flow laboratories. They operate in a lower flow range (usually up to 100 m3/h) depending on the size of the bell and are widely used for calibrating various types of flow meters. The volume generated by the bell can be determined with some measurement uncertainty by the area of the bell and the measured bell displacement. This volume and the measured time give the flow generated by the bell. The temperature and the pressure of the gas in the bell are not constant and have to be measured. Furthermore, the temperature and the pressure at the flow meter to be calibrated are not equal to those in the bell due to losses in pipes. By measuring all the significant quantities automatically, it is possible to analyze the bell prover system behaviour. Dynamics of the bell prover and its parameters are presented as a basis for a future analysis of the oscillatory motion regarding the measurement results. The parameters that influence the measurement uncertainty are also shown with the measurement results.
