Multi-sensor satellite observations of the Adriatic Sea response to severe bora winds

One of the better known Adriatic winter winds is Bora – gusty, cold, downslope, north-easterly air flow blowing over the Dinaric Alps. Its onset, longevity and severity are determined by larger atmospheric flows, but ultimately controlled by local orographic features. Outbreaks of Bora exhibit lateral shearing and jets of higher wind speed that provoke pronounced cooling and evaporative fluxes, and modify pre-existing circulation, as well as heat and suspended material content. Powerful Bora wind events leave surface imprints detectable in visible, infrared, and microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Exploiting the synergy of respective satellite-detected data one can improve monitoring and/or modelling of Bora impact on the northern Adriatic condition. This study demonstrates that microwave sensors (e.g. Quikscat) can capture orientation and intensity of Bora jets as well as lateral shearing on their sides. Thermal sensors (e.g. AVHRR or MODIS) can register the SST magnitude and pattern changes that accompany Bora events. Due to the suspended material originated from the Po and smaller northern Adriatic rivers, optical sensors (like SeaWiFS or MODIS) can detect changes in turbidity intensity and spatial patterns, imparted by Bora-triggered offshore extrusions of coastal waters.
