Cost minimization of an orthogonally stiffened welded steel plate subject to static and fatigue load
An orthogonally stiffened plate subject to static and variable centrally compressive loads is optimized for economy. Stiffeners of halved rolled I-section are used in both directions. The constraints on overall buckling and stiffener torsional buckling are formulated according to design rules of Det Norske Veritas. The fatigue constraint expresses that the maximum normal stress in longitudinal stiffeners due to variable load should be smaller than the allowable fatigue stress range prescribed by Eurocode 3 Part 1.9 for welded connections of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners. The danger of interaction of buckling and fatigue phenomena is avoided by using a multiplying factor. The cost function includes the material, welding and painting costs. The variables to be optimized are the dimensions and numbers of stiffeners in both directions and the base plate thickness. The particle swarm mathematical method is used for the constrained function optimization.
