Application of explosion welding process in industry
In fusion welding it is difficult to weld metals with greatly differing melting points, and obviously it is impossible if the boiling-point temperature of one is close to the melting-point temperature of the other. Even with some metals with a similar melting point there are serious metallurgical problems, such as formation of inter-metallic compounds with undesirable properties, as in the case of titanium welded to steel, when a very brittle compound is formed. These problems are in addition to the problems associated with a cast structure in the weld zone, and other metallurgical problems encountered with heat-affected zone (HAZ). Though the metallurgical problems in the solid-phase welding processes e.g. explosion welding are less acute than in fusion welding processes there are other serious limitations. The paper analyses theory aspects off explosive metal joining. Explosion– clad products are used in the manufacture of process equipment for the chemical, petrochemical and petroleum industries, where corrosion resistance of an expensive metal is combined with strength and economy of another. The corrosion resistant materials like steel, aluminum and their alloys, titanium, zirconium, tantalum, frequently in process chemical, nuclear power, space and air force, shipbuilding, food processing and pharmaceutical industries at shells, engines, pressure vessels, pumps and heat exchangers production are used. Due to high cost of mentioned high quality properties materials, only solution for their extensive application is clad material (primarily by explosion welding) in the form of two-layer or multiple-layered material The metallographic analyses with mechanical joints quality examinations are discussed. Efficiency off explosion welding process application was confirmed specially at dissimilar material joining, as are zirconium and titanium in three-metal joints with carbon steel and aluminum- magnesium alloy and carbon steel, where quality joints by melting welding process are not possible to achieve.
