Electron beam welding of high-temperature corrosion resistant new grades alloys

Manoir Industries is a world leader for fabrication of centrifugally cast tubes used for ethylene steam cracker furnaces and hydrogen / ammonia reformer furnaces. At the same time long series of years Manoir Industries uses and develops electron beam welding (EBW) procedure for joining one’ s own products made of most popular high-temperature corrosion resistant alloys like XM (GX45NiCrNb35.25), XTM (GX45NiCrNb45.35) and last developed Manaurite XOR and 40XO. Indeed, Manaurite XOR is an XM based + Tantalum with higher creep properties and 40XO is a 30 % Cr – 40 % Ni + Tantalum + Aluminium with higher corrosion properties. The high power density plus the extremely high penetration of electrons give instant welding of joint. EBW, three electrodes triode designed gun with indirect heating, is a high energy density fusion process that is accomplished by impacting the joint to be welded with an intense strongly focused beam of electron that have been accelerated up to 0, 3… .0, 7 times the speed of light at 25… 250 KV respectively. The instantaneous conversion of the kinetic energy of these electrons into thermal energy as they impact and penetrate into work piece on which they are impinging causes the weld seam interface surfaces to melt and produces the weld joint. Because the total kinetic energy of the electron can be concentrated into a small area on the work piece, power densities as high as 106 Wcm-2 can be achieved. This characteristic distinguishes the electron beam welding (EBW) from other welding processes, where the rate of melting is limited by thermal conductivity. The advantages of EBW are numerous, which are in article presented. Welding parameters (pointing+welding+2x smoothing) have been successfully adapted to assemble 10mm thickness of XM grade. The successfulness of XM material EBW performing and high quality of welds properties are confirmed by metallographic and mechanical properties examinations.
