Mutual assistance between the servers - a factor in increasing the queuing system efficiency

Queuing systems efficiency may be measured by means of the average time that a customer spends in a queue. Customers and servers are interested both to reduce the waiting time in the queuing system as much as possible. One of the methods to do so is to introduce the mutual assistance between the servers. Since it is plausible to expect that the mutual assistance would reduce the waiting time and hence increase the queuing system efficiency, this paper aims to confirm such an assumption but also to quantify the changes in the waiting time. For this purpose, the waiting times in the systems with and without mutual assistance between the servers were compared. The comparison resulted in a mathematical expression that enabled us to actually calculate the changes in the waiting time depending on given system parameters (λ , μ , S). On the basis of the previously derived expression, it is possible to make the adequate executive decisions as to the implementation of the mutual assistance between the servers aiming to optimize the queuing system efficiency. The paper presents the real-life example of a port container terminal and analyses advantages and disadvantages of the mutual assistance between the servers.
