Investigation of the free surface flow around the fishing vessel

The aim of the paper is to examine the possibilities of two numerical methods, the boundary element method and the control volume method, in the prediction of the total resistance and the wave pattern of the fishing vessel. Computer code for solving a nonlinear free surface flow problem for a ship moving with constant speed in calm water has been developed based on the RAPID (Raised-Panel-Iterative-Dawson) method developed at MARIN. The speed of the calculation gives certain flexibility and a wide range of the ship hull parameters can be rapidly and easily covered. The commercial CFD package STAR-CCM+ has been used for the control volume method calculation. The extensive investigation of certain parameters of the CFD package has been performed in order to achieve more accurate results and to gain experience for future numerical flow simulations around ship forms. The results of the CFD analysis have been compared with experimental towing tank results for the Froude number range 0.136-0.477. Both methods aim to compute the wave profile and total resistance quite accurately. The applicability estimation of each method regarding the time consumed and results that can be obtained by using it has been performed as well.
