Study of indentation induced cracks in SiC ceramics

In this paper fracture toughness (KIC), hardness (HV) and type of crack system of CVD SiC ceramics was evaluated by using Vickers indentation method at room temperature. Four indentation loads ranging from 9.81 N - 98.1 N were applied to SCD SIC ceramics specimen mirror polished prior to indentation. Fracture toughness (KIC) was calculated ‘ direct crack measurement’ technique by the Anstis method. The hardness was found to decrease with increasing applied load, while the fracture toughness KIC increase with increasing applied load. Median-radial crack system was occurred in the CVD SiC ceramics.
