Overview of RPL investigations at the Ruđer Bošković Institute
Radiophotoluminescent (RPL) glass dosimetry has been introduced in Radiation Chemistry and Dosimetry Laboratory (RCDL) in year 2005. Thanks to the collaboration between RCDL and Chiyoda Technol Corporation the laboratory received two radiophotoluminescent readers: FGD-202 RPL reader and SC-1 dosemeters are primarily for the measurements in the field of environmental dosimetry. Dose Ace FGD -1000 reader and small glass rod dosemetrs are used for investigations in the field of medical dosimetry. The characterisation of RPL dosemeters according to international standards IEC 1066 (1991) and IEC 61066 (2006) was carried out. Dosimetric characteristics such as reproducibility, linearity, detection threshold and energy dependence for both dosimetry systems were determined. The results of investigated SC-1 RPL dosemeters showed that they fulfil the requirements of international standards for environmental dosimetry. Recently they are together with TLDs included in the field measurements around the nuclear power plant Krško. Results received in 3 measurement cycles of 6 months will be presented. In the cooperation with Children’s Hospital Srebrnjak doses on children during diagnostic X-ray procedures were measured with both RPL dosimetry systems. The measurements of the out-of-field doses during the Leksell Gamma Knife Model C radiosurgery for children were started. The children population was chosen due to their higher susceptibility to radiation. Preliminary results obtained for two children show very good agreement between different dosimetry methods. In the future the extension of RPL measurements in medicine during various radiology and radiotherapy procedures and the comparison of calculated doses with dosimetry measurements in RANDO phantom are planned.
