Gamma irradiation treatment for protection of cultural heritage in Croatia
Gamma irradiation treatment for the protection of cultural heritage objects in Croatia was described. The status of the application of irradiation treatment for the preservation of the cultural heritage objects in Croatia within the twenty five years of experience in radiation processing was presented. The irradiation facility at the Ruder Boskovic Institute was described and an account of its fifteen years of activities in irradiation treatment of cultural heritage objects was given. More than 5000 wooden sculptures, parts of altars, pieces of furniture, musical instruments and other wooden, paper, textile and leather items were treated in the facility. Some case studies performed in cooperation with the Croatian Conservation Institute and other interested parties were presented concerning protective and curative treatments for disinfestation and decontamination.
