Radial Stress in Cold Backward Extrusion: Upper Bound and Analytical Solution

Current paper gives insight into intensity and distribution of the radial contact stress between the die – container and workpiece in cold backward extrusion. Methods applied in the investigations were Upper Bound and analytical solution. Upper Bound method is based upon the extremum principles of the fon Mises theory of plasticity. The value of load and other process parameters can be obtained by defining the kinematically admissible velocity field in different zones of the workpiece material. Upon this principles UBET (Upper Bound Elemental Technique) approach , which is used in this paper, has been developed. Analytical solution is based on double upsetting process (in axial and radial direction), introduced by Dipper. Obtained results are analyzed and compared. Suggestions for further work are given.
