Detection of biogas at the municipal waste landfill using a thermal imaging camera

Detecting accumulation of biogas as a product of anaerobic fermentation of organic matter (substrate) at the municipal landfill is important for locating deposits of useful energy and to avoid the possibility of an uncontrolled fire. The procedure is based on the periodic thermographic recording of the landfill location using a thermal imaging camera in the spectral region between 8-14 μm. Based on the calculated temperature differences between locations both within each thermal image and between different thermal images, it is possible to determine biogas deposits in the waste landfill. Numerical analysis of thermal images obtained from the thermal imaging camera is performed using dedicated software, which allows the visualization and display of numerical results obtained by measurements. The result of thermal inspection is mapping areas of localized biogas deposits on the spatial plan of the landfill. Located places of biogas are used for drilling vertical holes (gas-wells). Tubes are inserted through the vertical holes and using these tubes biogas is transported to the place of consumption. This procedure optimizes the number of required drilling in order to achieve maximum gain. Individual biogas locations may have an arbitrary number of vertical holes, depending on their size and thermal activity of landfill biogas. These procedures of detecting biogas, besides showing the initial distribution of vertical wells in landfills, enable time monitoring of utilization of individual deposits and the ability to create new deposits in the process of exploitation. Thermovision inspection is performed using the thermal imaging camera NEC Thermo Tracer TH7102WL, with accompanying software support developed specifically for this task at the Institute R. Bošković-CIR, on the location of municipal landfill Jakuševac, Zagreb.
