Railway as Backbone for Regional Passenger Transport
In the past ten years railway passenger transport has experienced significant change, particularly in the way subsidies are obtained, and the need has emerged for change in the communication with the user through the adjustment of the timetable and transport capacity. Such a situation is fertile ground for redefining the role of railways in passenger transport in regional traffic. Railways have a comparative advantage over road transport of passengers, especially in regard to speed, capacity and comfort, but unfortunately the weak point is the lack of door-to-door passenger transport. Thus, successful regional traffic is based on mutual entanglement of railway and road traffic in such a way as to use the comparative advantages of each of the modes. Railway would figure as the river of traffic flow and the road transport would be the tributaries. The initial step is to investigate transport demand, and thereafter determine the line layout and function. The paper will show a possible way to maintain the rail system as the carrier of traffic load in passenger traffic in the area of the Varaždin County in Croatia.
