Alkaline Electrolyser with Large Porosity Metal Foam Electrode Characterisation

The systems for hydrogen production are today's the most recent area of interests all over the world. Because of carbon dioxide (CO2) mitigation and commercial availability, systems which combine photovoltaic (PV) modules and electrolysers are in the focus of research. In this paper it was shown detailed characterisation of alkaline hydrogen production based on the metal foam as the electrodes. With chosen nickel (Ni) as an electrode material, electrode catalytic activity is determined, but numbers of important parameters that influence the process remain to be analysed such as electrolyte concentration, electrolyser operating voltage, electrolyser operating current density, contact resistances and electrodes porosity which allows an electrolyte to flow through a three-dimensional (3D) electrodes. All of these parameters are directly connected with electrodes active surface area. For its determination in case of a 3D electrodes from metal foam it has been used BET method. Furthermore, the velocity of two-phase flow of gas bubbles and liquid electrolyte mixture can be controlled outside of electrolyser by centrifugal pumps. This characterisation is primarily performed to improve electrolyser mathematical model and with this electrolyser efficiency as well. All of these influences were shown in experimental electrolyser UI characteristics diagrams.
