Low temperature electron-sin relaxation in molecular solid: EPR study of ethanol
In the multidisciplinary quest for understanding of glasses, the study of solid ethanol provides an adequate experimental framework to investigate dynamics in molecular solids as the alcohol can be easily prepared in states characterized by different types of disorder. The advantage of applying electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is in the sensitivity of the electron-spin coupling with the disorder modes in the observed system. Since ethanol is diamagnetic, the paramagnetic centre/nitroxyl radical should be incorporated. Here we present the experimental evidence pointing to the coupling of the electron spin with the boson peak excitations of the lattice. This result is related to the one-phonon mechanisms which dominate the low-temperature energy exchange between the spin system and the lattice. In this context several models of phonon density of states are commented.
