Heavy Metals in Coastal Sea Sediments of the Eastern Adriatic Sea
Polluted sediments present a threat to the health of the marine ecosystem and indirectly to the public health. In this work, more than 700 samples of the surface sea sediments have been collected in the eastern Adriatic coastal sea and analyzed for number of elements in effort to screen the whole area and to find the patterns of pollution pressure. In order to manage the large number of data, the GIS based database containing chemical element concentrations and descriptive data such is type of location has been produced. Results presented as GIS concentration distribution maps clearly show the presence of “hot-spots”, which are investigated in details. In addition, the background values for measured chemical elements have been evaluated as a scientific basis for assessment of enrichment factors and quality criteria standards. The approach to this problem that we have been developed for the eastern Adriatic Sea is proposed to be applied elsewhere in particular to the Mediterranean Sea region.
